SABLE STROUT (she/her) is an opera director and artistic director based in Portland, Maine known for her site-specific, alternative, and reimagined operatic experiences. This season (2026/27) Sable adapted a new production of Verdi’s A Masked Ball (Opera in the Pines), presented at the Maine State Building in Poland, Maine. In the spring, she will direct Orpheus Retold at the OperaDelaware studios: a re-telling of the Orpheus legend from three unique perspectives through the music of three living composers.

Sable is a co-founder and the artistic director of Opera in the Pines; an alternative opera company committed to reinventing the opera experience through site-specific operatic productions. Her productions at the company include: The Diary of Anne Frank, Bar Crawl Bohème, The Crucible, The Barber of the Cape, and A Masked Ball.

Last season, Sable “brought immediacy and intimacy to a well-worn operatic classic.” with an immersive production of La Traviata (Kentucky Opera) and adapted Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia to a nautical, site-specific setting with The Barber of the Cape (Opera in the Pines) presented at the Cape Neddick Lobster Pound in Maine.

As an assistant director she has worked with On Site Opera, Central City Opera, Seattle Opera, and The Glimmerglass Festival.

Sable received a BM in Vocal Performance from the University of Southern Maine, MM in Opera Performance at Wichita State University, and a certificate in Opera Direction from Ithaca College. As a singer Sable performed roles with Central City Opera, Opera Idaho, Charlottesville Opera, Wichita Grand Opera, Penn Square Opera, Inland Northwest Opera, Opera Saratoga, Syracuse Opera, and Tri-Cities Opera.
